The legend of How the Kiwi Lost its Wings

The Legend Of How The Kiwi Lost Its Wings

One day the forest god Tanemahuta looked at his children, the trees, they were getting sick because bugs were eating them. Tanemahuta, the forest god asked the sky god Tanehokahoka (brother) to call all the birds together. When all the birds got together. Tanemahuta said one of you have to come down and live on the forest ground to eat the bugs to save the children, the trees.

First he asked the Tui, but Tui said  "no, It is to dark "

Then he asked Pukeko and Pukeko said "No, It is to damp "

So he asked Pipiwharauroa but Pipiwharauroa said "No, I am to busy building my nest"

Tanemahuta and Tanehokahoka (the brothers) were sad. Tanehokahoka turned to kiwi and asked Kiwi "will you come down from the forest roof"

Kiwi said " I will "

Tanemahuta and Tanehokahoka were happy but Tanemahuta warned kiwi that you will grow thick legs to live on the ground and that you will loose you coloured feathers and you will never ever fly again and never see the light of day. The Kiwi said " I know "

Then Tanehokahoka turned to the other birds and said      Tui because you were to scared to come down you will wear two white feathers at your throat as a mark of a coweard. " Pukeko because you didn't want to get your feet wet you will live in the swamp. " Pipiwharauroa because you were to busy building your nest you will never build a nest again but lay your eggs in other birds nests.

But you Kiwi, because of your great sacrifice, you will become the most well-known and most loved bird of them all.
