Current events, Question 6

Current events, Question 6

Current events is a thing we do each week. We go into group and answer question about things in the news from around the world. The we pick one of the questions and write a blog post about that question.

What caused the middle lanes of the Auckland Harbour Bridge to close at the start of the holidays?

a. it was damaged when a truck flipped over in strong winds

b. a minor earthquake caused damage to the road surface

c. a bus hit an oil tanker causing it to leak oil on the road

Answer A - It was damaged when a truck flipped over in strong winds. A new permanent strut has been crafted in Whangārei to replace the temporary fixture reinforcing the structure, after it was badly damaged on September 18.

Tuesday morning saw the Auckland Harbour Bridge close completely to motorists for about an hour as wind gusts reached 98 kilometres per hour. Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has warned that further lane closures are possible if severe gusts continue. It comes after the bridge was severely damaged on September 18 when a “freak’ gust of wind blew a truck into the bridge.
